Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR)

Efficient automatic differentiation of CAD systems

Within the Initial Training Network (ITN) "IODA: Industrial Optimal Design using Adjoint CFD", the overall goal of this ESR position is the efficient provision of derivative information for a parameter-based CAD system. These derivatives of the parametrisation are required to fully integrate the parametrisation into gradient-based optimisation workflows, but for typical CAD systems these derivatives are not available. Therefore, in this project the open-source CAD kernel OpenCASCADE has to be differentiated using the Automatic Differentiation (AD) software tool ADOL-C that is developed in the group of Prof. Walther.. Subsequently, the differentiated CAD tool will be included in a complete design chain for the optimization in close cooperation with other ESRs within the IODA ITN.

Applicants must have a strong background in Numerical Methods, Nonlinear Optimization techniques and/or Algorithmic Differentiation and have an interest in using mathematics and programming to solve real-world problems. Applicants must have obtained a master's degree or expect to complete a master's degree by July 1, 2015. Good programming skills in C/C++ and ability to work in a Linux based environment are important. Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, be capable of working independently, as well as being able to collaborate and communicate.  Furthermore, good language skills (at least English) are required. The candidates must meet the Marie Curie ITN eligibility criteria for this ESR position.
