An important modern class of computational methods is based on the notion of Adaptivity. This, in most cases means that the algorithm not only can detect the features of interest of the desired solution, but in addition is automatically adapted to provide an accurate computational approximation. This procedure is heavily problem dependent, of nonlinear character and of high sophistication. An additional notion linked in a natural way to adaptive methods for approximating Partial Differential Equations is the Guaranteed Accuracy of the algorithm. This is achieved in principle by error control of a posteriori type, i.e., by error bounds that depend on the and not on the computed approximate solutionunknown exact solution. In this talk we discuss adaptive algorithms and a posteriori error control for evolution problems.  We will consider parabolic and wave type problems as well as hyperbolic conservation laws.
