Problems in high spatial dimensions cause particular numerical problems. Even discretisations of elliptic pde in a 3D grid of size 1.000.000 in each space coordinate requires very special approaches. A very attractive idea is the use of the tensor  calculus. Under certain conditions problems in n^d (d: dimension) degrees of freedom can be approximated with d*n*log^*(n) operations and storage. The numerical treatment of large-scale tensors is a particular challenge, since we need fast truncation operations. Here the traditional tensor representations are not optimal. Instead a format is introduced which has operations counts of the desired form. The final aim is the application to Quantum Chemistry Applications. Here, numerical results for Hartree-Fock calculations show that one can expect a good approximation of the eigenfunctions as well as of the electron density.
